Interview protocols adapted to medical clinics: a guide by specialty

A dermatology clinic doesn't have the same needs as a family medicine practice or a physiotherapy clinic. Yet, too many cleaning companies offer a generic approach that doesn't take into account the specific requirements of each medical specialty.

A truly effective interview must be tailored to your specific practice.
Why each specialty is different
Medical clinics are distinguished by several factors that influence their maintenance needs.
The types of patients vary considerably. A pediatric clinic sees children who touch everything and put objects in their mouths. A geriatric clinic receives immunocompromised patients for whom disinfection is essential. A sports medicine clinic sees sweaty athletes using the equipment.
Equipment varies depending on the specialty. Each practice uses specific instruments and devices that require appropriate cleaning methods. A treadmill in a rehabilitation clinic is not cleaned in the same way as an examination table in dermatology.
Risk areas also vary. Contact points and high-risk areas vary depending on the specialty. A vaccination clinic must pay particular attention to injection sites, while an allergy clinic must ensure the absence of allergens in the ambient air.
Family and general medicine
Family medicine clinics serve a wide variety of patients with diverse conditions. They are often the first point of contact with the healthcare system.
Maintenance priorities include frequent disinfection of the waiting room where contagious patients are in close proximity to others, rigorous cleaning of examination rooms between each patient, and special attention to blood collection and injection areas.
Since patient turnover is generally high, protocols must be efficient and rapid without compromising quality.
Dermatology and aesthetic medicine
These clinics require a particularly high level of cleanliness, as patients are often very attentive to the appearance of the premises — and, by extension, to their hygiene.
Treatment rooms must be spotless, as patients closely examine their skin, often using magnifying mirrors. Any imperfection will be noticed. Specialized equipment, such as lasers and hair removal devices, requires specific cleaning protocols to prevent damage.
The overall atmosphere should evoke cleanliness and precision, consistent with the aesthetic services offered.
Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
These clinics present specific maintenance challenges. Patients exercise, sweat, and use shared equipment.
Mats, balls, elastic bands, and other accessories must be disinfected daily. Treatment tables are particularly exposed because patients lie on them for extended periods.
Ventilation and air quality are important, as physical exertion increases patients' respiratory rate.
Changing rooms and showers, if present, require special attention to prevent fungal infections.
Pediatrics
Pediatric clinics have to deal with the fact that children touch everything, put objects in their mouths and often have difficulty following hygiene guidelines.
The play area in the waiting room is a critical zone. Toys must be disinfected daily, and low surfaces at child height require special attention.
Cleaning products must be carefully chosen to avoid irritants and allergens that may affect young patients.
The atmosphere must remain warm and welcoming despite the strict hygiene protocols.
Geriatrics and care for the elderly
Elderly clients often have reduced immunity, making disinfection particularly important.
Support surfaces, such as handrails, armrests and handles, should be disinfected frequently, as patients regularly lean on them.
The floors must be perfectly clean and, above all, dry to prevent falls.
Odors must be controlled, as elderly patients may be sensitive to strong smells.
Establish a personalized routine
An experienced maintenance partner will take the time to assess your clinic before proposing a routine. This assessment should include a site visit to identify specific areas, a discussion of your procedures and any particular concerns, as well as an understanding of your hours and patient volume.
The proposed routine must be clearly documented and periodically reviewed to adapt to the evolution of your practice.
At Mistral Housekeeping, we develop customized routines for each medical clinic we work with in Montreal and on the South Shore. Our 30+ years of experience allow us to quickly understand the specific needs of each specialty and respond to them precisely.
